The volume includes articles that confront this notion both from the perspective of art history, architecture, and archaeology, and from a historiographical point of view, which examines the reception of Armenian arts by scholars from Italy, Russia, and France. The articles in this richly illustrated volume aim to reposition Armenia as one of the forces of artistic creation and mediation to be reckoned with within the Mediterranean and Eurasian space of Late Antiquity. Transferring Knowledge: from Material to Immaterial Heritage? (Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange H2020). Although it is an important location of cultural heritage and has been consequential historiographically and in the formation of art history, there has never been a comprehensive, interdisciplinary approach to this momentous site. Thus, this volume publishes the first results of the interdisciplinary and international project, which were initially presented at a conference and enriched by workshops held in New York City in the summer of 2022. The collected essays open with reflective and historiographic work on Conques in the nineteenth century. These segue into essays reconsidering specific integral elements of extant medieval materials at the site. Finally, the volume concludes with a series of essays devoted to placing Conques in a broader context. Its contributions thus focus on the Christianization of the Roman Empire between the fourth and sixth centuries. The studies examine the religious change through the ?material turn? approach, building on the material and sensorial dimension of Christian conversion and especially the baptismal rite as one of the key components of the process. Speaking in various forums Xavier Barral i Altet, Nicolas Bock, Valentina Cantone, Herbert Kessler, Serena Romano and Elisabetta Scirocco have sparked exciting discussions of what continues to be known as a Middle Age.
The common denominator that unites all of the scholarly work presented was the dialogue between the medieval “present” and the antique world: from Venice through Campania to Milan, from Constantinople to Burgundy, there emerged an intellectual and visual experience that suggests the medieval period was a uniquely fertile moment for engagement with the heritage of antiquity, filtered and mediated in different ways, but ever present.
The purpose of this volume is to understand why and how patterns, images and ideas from the mythical (but visible) ancient past were received throughout the medieval millennium. Il suo ingresso principale è costituito da un ampio nartece, caratterizzato dalla presenza di opere straordinarie, quali l'antica porta lignea, la decorazione a imitazione del marmo di V secolo e l'imago altomedievale della Theotokos.
